The Benefits of Clinical Hypnotherapy for Mental Health Treatment

Updated: Sep 12, 2023

Clinical hypnotherapy is often seen as an alternative or supplemental treatment method in the field of mental health, though it is a helpful part of many people's treatment plans. Clinical hypnotherapy can be a successful tool for many individuals, but it should be combined with other treatments to ensure the best results.

Clinical Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic treatment option that can help individuals struggling with stress and anxiety. The therapy involves a technique in which an individual is guided into a state of emotional awareness to more attentively focus and assess experiences, emotions, and patterns of thinking. Hypnotherapy can help individuals diagnosed with stress or anxiety disorders such as phobias, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, OCD, and more.

History About Hypnosis

For hundreds of years, hypnosis has been used to induce a relaxing state of focus. However, it wasn’t until recently that hypnotherapy was accepted as a medicinal tool. Nowadays, hypnosis is commonly used in complementary therapies for mental health conditions.

What happens during hypnotherapy sessions?

A clinical hypnotherapist will help guide you to a state of hypnosis and relaxation, in which you will experience heightened awareness. Then the therapist will provide suggestions to address, confront, and change issues. This leads to the reduction of stress and anxiety-related symptoms.

Misconceptions Surrounding Hypnotherapy for Mental Health

Misconceptions about hypnotherapy can be barriers to treatment. If people understand hypnosis and its benefits, they may be more likely to seek this treatment option. Some common misconceptions are that:

  1. A common myth about hypnosis is that it causes a state of confusion in which an individual has no control over his or her thoughts, emotions, or behaviors. However, this is not the case with clinical hypnosis; individuals do not lose control when they enter a hypnotic state.

  2. It makes you forget. Although hypnosis cannot erase memories of past experiences, unlike some believe, you will remember your hypnosis session and remain conscious during the whole time.

  3. One of the most common misconceptions about hypnosis is that only a small percentage of people can be hypnotized. However, it’s actually the reverse; only 10 percent of people find they don’t fall into a state of hypnosis.
